New York, New York

My grandmother and I in New York City
New York City is the quintessential city to experience Christmas. There is no better feeling than seeing that Christmas tree in Rockefeller center lit up for all to see – and I truly do mean all. To celebrate my grandmother’s seventy-fifth birthday (a few months late) we traveled up to New York City on Saturday morning for a girl’s weekend. Our entourage included myself, my sister, my mother, my aunt and the guest of honor herself – my grandmother.

There were many highlights to our trip, most notably the viewing of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. My grandmother had never seen the world famous Rockettes and so we treated her to their one of a kind high-flying kicks. I have been once before but truly, would love to make this a yearly event. I adore musicals of any kind (favorites include The Sound of Music, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Bye Bye Birdie, and Oklahoma) and the glitz and precision of the Rockettes is unparalleled.

My mother had never even been to New York City so this was her first experience with the City itself. I think she enjoyed herself despite her pronounced distaste of all things urban. She will be the first to tell you that our weekend was spent waiting in a lot of lines – a sure sign that we were at all the ‘right’ places.

We chose one of the busiest weekends to descend upon the famed tree and so we dealt with the repercussions of such ludicrous travels. Thankfully, we survived the masses of humanity and checked one more lifetime achievement off of the list.

Sunday morning we rose early to take in a crisp morning stroll through Central Park and a delightful breakfast courtesy of Sarabeth’s on Central Park South. I will recommend this to anyone who is looking for a charming brunch locale in the city; it was our culinary highlight of the trip.

Non-existent taxi cabs aside, the time spent with my grandmother was immeasurable and I enjoyed every second of the weekend feting her seventy-five years of life, love and family. It was a pleasure for me to orchestrate the weekend and even more so to see the delight in my grandmother’s eyes throughout our stay. I am elated that the women in our family are so full of love and that these trips are so meaningful to all involved.

Happy birthday, Gramie. I love you, dearly.

Love that "the boots" also made the trip. White is a great color on you! Glad you had a great trip!

This is totally beside the point, but my dad always used to sing that "sisters" line whenever my sister and I were arguing. It drove us nuts :-)
